Domestic and export prices remained unchanged from the previous week, except for parboiled rice. Parboiled rice prices increased around 1.0 percent as exporters are sourcing parboiled rice to fulfill their outstanding contracts with Nigeria of 0.3 – 0.5 million tons for delivery by June 2012. The Thai Rice Exporters Association expects that this shipment will help Thailand’s monthly rice exports to be above 0.5 million tons/month during February – May 2012, as compared to around 0.4 million tons in January 2012.

Presently, the Government is holding total intervention stocks of around 7.6 million tons milled equivalent, of which 2.0 million tons are old-crop intervention stocks, and 5.6 million tons are MY2011/12 crop.

The MY2011/12 main-crop Paddy Pledging Program took delivery of a total of 6.8 million tons of paddy (4.5 million tons milled equivalent (Table 2). The remainder is from the current off-season Paddy Pleading Program which has absorbed 1.7 million tons of paddy (1.1 million tons milled Bangkokequivalent) during March 1-26, up significantly from around 1.0 million tons in the previous week (Table 3). The Government expects that the program will pledge around 8.0 million tons of paddy (5.3 million tons milled equivalent), accounting for 72.0 percent of the total off-season production.

Rice Export Update

Unofficial rice exports (excluding fragrant rice) for March 19-25, 2012 totaled 116,595 tons, up 9,641 tons from the previous week, and up 21,053 tons from the four-week moving average of 95,542 tons. Exports of white rice and parboiled rice during January1 – March 25, 2012 totaled 1,096,962 tons, down 53.1 percent from 2,338,564 tons in the previous year.

According to the Department of Foreign trade, Ministry of Commerce, total rice exports (including fragrant rice) during January 1 – March 20, 2012 amounted to 1,326,523 tons, down 49.6 percent from 2,631,993 tons in the previous year.
