USDA GAIN Report - Oilseeds, Cotton, Sugar, Grain and Feed

Domestic and export prices increased 1-3 percent, particularly for parboiled rice, as some foreign buyers are still sourcing Thai parboiled rice for delivery to Nigeria before July 1, 2012 when the new applied import tariff rate will increase from 33 percent to 53 percent. Rice exporters expect that Thai rice exports in May 2012 will maintain its March and April’s average of 0.6 million tons due to parboiled rice exports to Nigeria. Thai exportable rice supplies remain tight as the aggressive Paddy Pledging Program increased total intervention stocks to 11.2 million tons milled equivalent, up 3.7 percent or 0.4 million tons from the previous week. Of these, 2.0 million tons are old-crop intervention stocks, and 9.2 million tons are current MY2011/12 crop.

The MY2011/12 main-crop Paddy Pledging Program took delivery of a total of 6.8 million tons of paddy (4.5 million tons milled equivalent (Table 2)). The current off-season Paddy Pleading Program has absorbed 7.1 million tons of paddy (4.7 million tons milled equivalent) since it began on March 1 up to May 20. However, the total weekly pledging declined to 0.6 million tons, down 37.5 percent from the previous week (Table 3). The Government expects that the program will eventually process around 8.0 million tons of paddy (5.3 million tons milled equivalent), accounting for 72.0 percent of the total off-season production.
