Valuable Cotton Lost Due to Flooding

09 February 2012

AUSTRALIA - One of Australia's most valuable cotton districts is being hit by a record flood. The Balonne River peaked in St George, at record heights.

The floodwater is moving downstream through country which produces more than ten per cent of the national cotton crop, according to ABC Rural.

Cotton farmer, Ian House, says the river is already swollen at his place: "Everyday it's in water we're losing yield and that's what we all strive for is the yield and there's not much we can do about it," he said.

"From that point of view once it's on there you can try to get it off but we've got so much water around us, we're fighting a losing battle."

He says it's too early to estimate his damage bill.
