Govt to Pursue Commercial Rice Production in Nepal

NEPAL - The Nepal government plans to pursue commercial rice cultivation programme in three districts from the next fiscal year.

The Himalayan reports that the Ministry of Agriculture Development is starting commercial cultivation of rice in Jhapa, Morang and Sunsari districts.

It said the programme is being launchedin an effort to enable farmers from other districts to study the commercial production of paddy.

The programme is aimed at bringing about new concepts in the production sector and to encourage farmers toward rice cultivation accordingly, the Ministry's Spokesperson, Dr Prabhakar Pathak, said.

Dr Pathak said that the scheme would be implemented in the three districts as a campaign in the form of a model project since it is becoming necessary to bring new programmes and plans to boost production.

The three districts are the top rice-producing districts in the country. Jointly, they produce two million metric tonnes of rice while the total production of the country is 5.2 million metric tonnes worth Rs. 100 billion.
