India’s Kharif Sowing Down to 93.5 MN Hectare

INDIA - India’s kharif sowing season has recorded a drop of 4 million hectares at 93.5 million hectares as on August 22, 2014 during the 2014-15 period.

During the same period last year, kharif sowing was recorded at 97.58 million hectares, the Indian agriculture ministry said in a statement.

Sowing of pulses during the period was down at 9.26 million hectares, as against 9.93 million hectares, whereas, coarse cereals were down to 16.48 million hectares, as compared to 18.94 million hectares during 2013-14.

Oil seeds sowing during 2014-15 were also down to 16.82 million hectares, as compared to 18.33 million hectares, followed by sugarcane at 4.71 million hectares against 5.03 million hectares.

However, rice sowing has shown an increase to 33.51 million hectares, against 33.37 million hectares followed by cotton sowing at 11.88 million hectares against, 11.13 million hectares, the statement adds.

Jute & mesta kharif sowing also dropped to 811,000 hectares, as compared to 831,000 hectares of sowing during 2013-14.
