Indian Sugar Output up 2.4 Million Tonnes

INDIA - Sugar production in India has recorded an increase in output as on February 28, 2015 at 19.4 million tonnes from 455 sugar mills, as compared to 17.04 million tonnes produced till the same period last year.

Till the period, sugar output in Uttar Pradesh state increased to 4.96 million tonnes, as compared to 4.34 million tonnes, Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA) said in a statement.

As on date, out of 118 sugar mills which started operation during the current sugar season, 3 sugar mills have closed their crushing operations in Uttar Pradesh, ISMA said. In Maharashtra, 177 sugar mills have produced about 7.4 million tonnes of sugar till the end of February 2015, as against 5.75 million tonnes produced in 2013-14 sugar season on the corresponding date.

Last year 129 sugar mills were under operation as on February 28, 2014. One sugar mill in Maharashtra has closed its crushing operation for the current season.

In Karnataka 63 sugar mills have produced 3.28 million tonnes of sugar as on February 28, 2015, against 3.09 million tonnes of sugar produced in 2013-14 sugar season till February 28, 2014.

Andhra Pradesh and Telangana sugar mills have produced 730,000 tonnes of sugar from 31 mills, as compared to 772,000 tonnes produced during the corresponding date last year.

In Tamil Nadu, 42 sugar mills have produced 460,000 tonnes of sugar, against 650,000 tonnes of sugar produced by 37 sugar mills in 2013-14 sugar season. As regards Gujarat, 840,000 tonnes of sugar have been produced by 19 sugar mills, as compared to 864,000 tonnes produced in the corresponding period last year.

In Bihar, 11 sugar mills have produced 1 lac tons of sugars more than last year’s production till 28th February.

During 2014-15 sugar season in Bihar as on February 28, 2015 sugar mills have produced 475,000 tonnes, as compared to 373,000 tonnes of sugar produced by these mills on the corresponding date.

In case of Punjab, 16 sugar mills which are in operation have produced 370,000 tonnes of sugar, as compared to 367,000 tonnes produced by 13 sugar mills as on February 28, last year.
