NSW Sugar Harvest Crushed By Bad Weather

15 December 2011

AUSTRALIA - The NSW sugar industry has had its worst year in two decades.

Rick Beattie, manager of agricultural services from the NSW Sugar Milling Co-op, says the 1.6 million tonnes crushed this year has been affected by bad weather, reports ABC Rural.

"Well, you've got to go back to about 1991 to find a tonnage lower than this one," he said.

"If you look at our 10-year average production, it's about 2.1 million tonnes, so what it's reflecting is the difficult conditions we've had in terms of wet seasons and frosting and flooding, basically since about 2007."
