Although every soon-to-be-mom tries to eat everything well and they are of the mindset that they are consuming the right meals, a recent study tells differently.
What Pregnancy-Related Studies Reveal Scientific Insights? – Tests And Investigations
According to a study conducted in some major countries like Singapore, UK, and New Zealand, it was found that 90% of pregnant ladies were not getting the vital nutrients required. Their healthy pregnancy journey and the overall well-being journey of the unborn kid were disturbed.
This study was conducted by some well-known scientists at Southampton University. They came on board with experts from across the world and tested over 1,700 pregnant ladies. What they found was shocking. The majority of those women were not consuming essential nutrients that are commonly found in dairy products and meat items.
Nutrients like folic acid, B12, B6, and riboflavin were missing and they are in fact, important for the healthy growth and development of a fetus.
The same was confirmed by Keith Godfrey, the professor of Epidemiology and lead author at the University of Southampton. He said that if there is a deficiency of essential nutrients in pregnant or trying women, then it is a sign of concern. This should not be the case in wealthy nations.
The professor further added that since more and more population is shifting to plant-based diets, they have stopped depending on dairy and meat to achieve their nutritional goals. In the sight of achieving zero carbon emissions have started depriving themselves of the key nutrients needed. This can easily cause long-lasting effects on those unborn kids.

According to the ady conducted at the University of Southampton, any woman who is trying to get pregnant is suffering from a lack of vital nutrients. There are not enough levels of one or more vitamins in their bodies. This is not improving and the condition is getting worse every day.
This is because plant-based diets are getting popular. People have a mindset that only those individuals are affected with nutrient deficiency who are from underdeveloped countries. But this is not true. Women living in high-income countries are also facing the same problem. The reason might be different but the results are the same.
This study was conducted for women aged between 18 and 38. 1,729 women were chosen at random for the test and the results were published in PLOS magazine. Experts from the University of Southampton, National University of Singapore, Biomedical Research Centre, Research and Technology, Singapore, and the University of Auckland came together for this.
According to the results, every 9 out of 10 women had a deficiency of vitamins B12, D, folate, and riboflavin. This is not a good sign, especially during the time of conception. In cases of late pregnancy, many women also lacked adequate levels of vitamin B6.
Moreover, Wayne Cutfield, the co-author of pediatric endocrinology from the University of Auckland said that folic acid is extremely important for women who are trying to get pregnant. It is also crucial during pregnancy and to reduce this nutritional deficiency, over-the-counter multivitamins and supplements can be prescribed.
He also said that if there is a nutritional deficiency in pregnant women, it directly affects the unborn child’s health, its ability to learn, and overall physical growth.
As per the study results released in the PLOS magazine, if supplements are provided to expecting mothers, this can reduce their vitamin deficiency.
Adding to this study, Shiao-Yng Chan said that if people do not stop indulging in plant-based diets where meat and dairy are stopped, the vitamin deficiency will not reduce. This will affect the kid’s overall growth and development. So, women have to eat a balanced diet and if they are focused on being plant-based then they should start increasing their supplement intake. It is also important to consult your doctor about the same.
