UK Cereals Usage by Millers, Brewers, Distillers & Maltsters - Review of December 2013
This statistical release contains information on the use of cereal grain, flour production and stocks of cereal by these cereal
processors on a monthly and crop year basis (July to June) and includes use of wheat for starch and bioethanol production. The
Oatmeal Millers data is now collected and reported on a quarterly basis.
Key Points for Wheat & Barley in December 2013 compared with December 2012:
Wheat Usage:
- The total amount of wheat milled was 583 thousand tonnes, down 3%.
- The total amount of home grown wheat milled was 486 thousand tonnes, up 10%.
- The total amount of imported wheat milled was 97 thousand tonnes, down 40%. The poorer quality 2012 UK crop has meant greater use of imported wheat, however, since November 2013 millers have started to revert back to using a greater proportion of home grown wheat from the better quality 2013 wheat crop
- Brewers, maltsters and distillers total wheat usage was 69 thousand tonnes, down 11%.
Barley Usage:
- Brewers, maltsters and distillers total barley usage was 158 thousand tonnes, down 3%.
Key Points for Oats usage in July to September 2013 compared with July to September 2012 :
- The total amount of oats milled was 120 thousand tonnes, up 6%.
