US corn planted acres shot higher this week to 71 per cent from 53 per cent last week. This week's 71 per cent planted compares favorably to the 5-year average of 47 per cent and 32 per cent from year-ago.

Numbers were strong in the "I" states - Illinois is at 89 per cent, Indiana at 84 per cent and Iowa lags a bit at 64 per cent. Kentucky, North Carolin and Tennessee are all 90+ per cent planted.

Corn emergence this week was at 32 per cent, up 17 percentage points from last week and significantly higher that the 5-year average of 13 per cent.

Soybean planting acres are at 24 per cent, well ahead of the 5-year average of 11 per cent and year ago at 6 per cent. The "I" states tell a different story in soybeans versus corn - Indianat is at 48 per cent planted, Illinois is at 21 per cent planted and Iowa is 7 per cent planted.

Not surprisingly, southern states Mississippi and Louisiana lead soybean acres planted at 74 per cent and 62 per cent respectively.

Cotton acres are at 36 per cent planted are also ahead of the 5-year average of 28 per cent. California and Lousisana lead acres planted with 85 per cent and 84 per cent respectively.
